Warm-Up 8, Due Tuesday, September 16, 12:00.

Warm-up questions usually either address material we handled during last class, or material you were to read in preparation for class, or you are supposed to answer questions based on your common sense alone. Please answer each question in three or more sentences. It is OK to answer 'I don't know' - but try to tell me why you are confused! No late Warm Ups are accepted for any reason, and only those submitted electronically through this web page (or by email, if the web page has technical problems) are considered.

Question 1

Read the article about a couple that sold their house using a lottery. Here is a link to the lottery itself. The price for one ticket was 25 Pounds, which is about 30 Euros. According to the owners, the house is worth 850 Pounds (about 1,000,000 Euros). They sold 46000 tickets.

In the news they interviewed one participant, who said that buying a ticket was a very good idea. "Even if I could sell the house for only 100,000 Pounds", he claimed, "it is so much more than the ticket price."

Would you have participated if you would have heard about it? Why, why not? Would it have mattered when you heared about it, at the beginning, or later, when the story was in all the newspapers. If you had heard about it early, would you have told it to your friends? To the newspapers? And, if you were in the same situation as the Wilshaw's, would you try the same scheme to get money for your house?
